16 Windows - Laci Geuy

16 Windows. A bland statement at best, but the art behind the name is anything but bland. These permanent art exhibits are located in the Canarsie Line in the New Lots Avenue Subway Station. The artist is Franz Mayer from Munich. Each pane or “canvas” is created with dyed glass and is a depiction of the view inside of a window into a house or apartment. Some window panes depict people and animals in them, while some are just a landscape. It takes people watching to a whole new meaning. It gives a fishbowl effect of being on the outside looking in. The art style is cartoonish and two dimensional. The author Franz Mayer used cross hatching to create shading in the flat artwork, but still uses the light shown through the glass as a saturation. Some of the more notable pieces are a black cat watching a bird, a female figure watering plants, a student working while sitting at a desk, and a figure looking at books on a bookshelf. Each panel shows depth in a limited two dimensional space. Some of them use perspective while keeping the two dimensional comic book style art. Overall, these works are truly astonishing.
